A service providing early detection health checks for predominantly Aboriginal people in far western New South Wales has won an award in this year's State Government Health Awards.
The Adult Health Check is a partnership between Maari Ma Health and the Greater Western Area Health Service.
It sends teams of health workers to regional communities, including Broken Hill and Wilcannia, to screen people for chronic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease.
It has won the award in the 'Making Prevention Everyone's Business' category.
Maari Ma Health regional director Richard Western says the award recognises the important work being done, but says early detection is only one of the many health issues needed to be addressed.
"The challenge is that once you've found some illness, or found some conditions that need addressing, you've got to work out ways to address that," he said.
"That's what we've been doing quite feverishly in the last 12 months as we've conducted the adult health checks."
